Justifying an EdD student’s research method for exploring the educational experiences of South Asian Muslim females

My current research topic as an Educational Doctoral (EdD) student involves the fusing of race, gender and religion. A thesis attempting to explore these facets was fated to be one with a tumultuous methodology. The educational experiences of ethnic minorities are well documented (Troyna, 1991; Haque, 2000; Pearce & Lewis, 2019) and thus, the task of selecting an appropriate method to assist the researcher in this thesis was a challenging one. As such, the synoptic methodology presented in this article is an attempt to portray the journey of an EdD student that debates the decision to use the following research methods: (1) classroom observations, (2) individual interviews with pupils and teachers, and (3) focus group interviews with pupils; as well as her justification for selecting Thematic Analysis for analysing the data produced from these methods using Braun & Clarke’s (2022) guidelines

Quantum mechanics gives stability to a Nash equilibrium

    Get PDF
We consider a slightly modified version of the Rock-Scissors-Paper (RSP) game from the point of view of evolutionary stability. In its classical version the game has a mixed Nash equilibrium (NE) not stable against mutants. We find a quantized version of the RSP game for which the classical mixed NE becomes stable.Comment: Revised on referee's criticism, submitted to Physical Review

Keywords: Poetry, Semiotics, Sociology of Literature, Human Nature, Dehumanization, Technology. Poetry is one of literary works that represents phenomena happening in society. A poet usually uses a poem as a media to describe the condition of his or her society by using specific words picturing the phenomena. One of the phenomena happening in society nowadays is technology development. Even though technology can help human to ease their daily life, it can also change all of their social aspects, which can make themselves deprive their qualities. Later, this phenomenon is usually called as dehumanization. This study aims to find out the effect of technology development toward culture and human nature as pictured in Touchscreen poem. This research analyzes the dehumanization effect of technology toward culture and human nature by using Semiotics and Sociology of Literature theory. Peirce\u27s semiotics theory of signs is used to reveal the meaning of Touchscreen poem. For further analysis on the human social aspects, the writer uses Sociology of Literature to analyze the aspects of human life those are affected by technology development. The result of the research shows that in Touchscreen poem, the poet pictures the dehumanization phenomenon by technology affecting culture aspects, such as lifestyle, social status, and communication. Besides, that phenomenon also affects human nature, in the relation to human feelings. By covering those aspects, technology changes modern people style of living. They usually buy high price technology device to symbolize their social status and to communicate with otherwithout real social contact. Later, the lack of contact decreases human feeling qualities, resulting effects to other people and nature. For the next researchers who look for new object to be analyzed, they are suggested to use Touchscreen poem that is analyzed by using postmodernism–hyper reality theory, because people nowadays usually have more attention to the World Wide Web than the real world. It means that those people have become more involved with the hyperreal world and less with the physical real world. People nowadays likely chose to stay online and update their daily status in social media rather than communicate directly with their family or friends

This study attempts to improve students' achievement in reading comprehension through team pair solo. This study was conducted by using classroom action research. The subject of this research was class VIII2 MTs Al-jihad which consisted of 41 students. The research was conducted in two cycles, cycle I consisted of four meetings and cycle II consisted of two meetings. The instruments for collecting data were quantitative data (reading comprehension test) and qualitative data (diary notes, observation sheet, and questionnaire sheet). Based on reading comprehension scores, students' score kept improving in every reading comprehension test. Based on diary notes, observation sheet, and questionnaire sheet, it was found that the teaching-learning process ran well. The students were active, interested, and enthusiastic in reading. The result of the research showed that team pair solo significantly improved students' achievement in reading comprehension

Bayesian inference of multivariate rotated GARCH models with skew returns

    Get PDF
Bayesian inference is proposed for volatility models, targeting financial returns, which exhibit high kurtosis and slight skewness. Rotated GARCH models are considered which can accommodate the multivariate standard normal, Student t, generalised error distributions and their skewed versions. Inference on the model parameters and prediction of future volatilities and cross-correlations are addressed by Markov chain Monte Carlo inference. Bivariate simulated data is used to assess the performance of the method, while two sets of real data are used for illustration: the first is a trivariate data set of financial stock indices and the second is a higher dimensional data set for which a portfolio allocation is performed
